You are invited to a hybrid lecture by Dr Dimitirs Bartzis on ‘The North Stoa at the agora of Argos: Methodology and results of the ongoing architectural study’ on Thursday November 19th 2026 at 19.00 pm (Greek time) 17.00 pm (Ireland time), 12.00 pm (Standard Eastern Time).
This is the first in our new seminar series for 2026–2027 on “Architecture and Space in Archaeology”.
Abstract
The northern sector of the ancient Αgora of Argos, has been excavated by the École française d'Athènes between 1985 and 2009 under the direction of Anne Pariente. The most prominent architectural remains discovered there belong to a krepis of a Hellenistic stoa. During its construction a pre-existing altar of the Classical period had been preserved intact in situ, being structurally and functionally integrated into the building. The stoa has a unique layout with a 14m radius horseshoe-shaped exedra attached to the middle part of the krepis. Another typological peculiarity is observed in the central intercolumniation, which is wider by one triglyph.
The main objective of the seminar is to present the architectural study in a way that allows participants to follow our entire line of reasoning, thereby placing greater emphasis on the methodological approach, rather than on the results of the research, which is still in progress.
