IIHSA Travel Scholarships Summer 2026

The Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens (IIHSA) invites applications by students from Irish universities for four 2026 scholarships, each of a value of €1000, for research and study in Greece. The awards are intended to cover travel expenses Ireland-Athens return, accommodation in the Institute’s hostel (or equivalent) and expenses for two weeks travel/research in Greece. Recipients will also be awarded free IIHSA membership, which entitles them to a free pass to archaeological sites and museums, and access to research libraries in Athens.

Conn Murphy Memorial Travel Scholarship. The scope of this award is intentionally broad, reflecting Conn’s wide interests and his great love for Greece: it is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students studying any aspect of Greek civilization (e.g. Greek and Roman Civilization, Archaeology, Classics, or cognate subjects) at any Irish University (on the island of Ireland). Activities may include - but are not restricted to - research for projects and papers, creative projects, participation in fieldwork, independent travel to see places and museums of specific interest.
More about the award: This scholarship is generously funded by Conn’s family in his memory, and will be offered annually.

Myrto Georgakopoulou Memorial Scholarship. Myrto was a well-known international researcher who specialised in archaeological sciences. This award, in her memory, is offered to students at any Irish University (on the island of Ireland) using archaeological sciences in their studies.
More about the award: Dr Thomas Loughlin was our Assistant Director in Athens between 2009 and 2013 and together with his wife, Dr Myrto Georgakopoulou (1976-2022), contributed greatly to the development of the Institute during those years. We are deeply grateful to Tom and their daughter Nefeli for donating funds in Myrto’s memory.

American Friends of the IIHSA Scholarships. Two scholarships are offered this year: these are open to students studying any aspect of Greek civilization (e.g. Greek and Roman Civilization, Archaeology, Classics) at any Irish University (on the island of Ireland). Eligible students are those undertaking a research project: this may include final undergraduate year projects (e.g. thesis or extended essay), as well as masters and PhD theses.
