You are invited to a hybrid lecture on Thursday October 29th 2026, at 19.00 pm (Greek time) 17.00 pm (Ireland time), 12.00 pm (Standard Eastern Time) by Professor Aidan O’Sullivan (Head of School of Archaeology, University College Dublin), ‘Experimental Archaeology: Making, Understanding, Storytelling’.
Abstract
Professor Aidan O'Sullivan is co-director, together with Dr Brendan O'Neill, of the University College Dublin Centre for Experimental Archaeology and Material Culture (CEAMC), which has been described as a "genuinely globalleading facility for experimental archaeology". Experimental Archaeology is defined at UCD as the "(re)construction of past buildings, technologies, practices, and things, based on archaeological evidence, and their investigation as archaeological analogies, through testing, recording, use and experience, so as to create a better understanding of people’s lives in the past.” (O’Sullivan and Souyouzoglou-Haywood, 2019) Over the last 15 years, CEAMC has explored the potential of experimental archaeology in research, teaching and publication, and this lecture will look back across multiple projects at the centre, as well as looking forward to understand what's next.
